Store-receipt chemicals taint blood and urine

Handling cash-register receipts may cost extra — at least in terms of health risks, a young written report suggests.

Receipt paper might look alike any early. But it's often backed with chemicals that change color when the paper is exposed to heat. That chemical trick makes it possible to print receipts without using ink. One so much color-change chemical often used in receipt newspaper is called bisphenol A (Bis-FEE-nul A). This BPA is used in many another products as well. Research has shown that this chemical can transit the skin and enter the human body. When it does, it sack mimic physicalhormones that help control many body activities. BPA has been linked with genus Cancer, fleshiness and vessel diseases.

With growing concern about the safety of BPA, paper companies suffer been looking for substitutes. Two of these, already used in receipt paper, can enrol the body as well as BPA, a new study finds. This raises concern because both of the compounds may carry similar health risks, says Kristina Thayer. She works at the National Institute of Environmental Wellness Sciences. It's in Research Triangle Park, N.C. As a toxicologist, she studies how poisons affect health. Her group's new findings appeared August 25 inEnvironmental Health Perspectives.

To incu out which color-modification chemicals are in use, Thayer and her colleagues tested receipts handled by 77 cashiers. Each acknowledge principally contained one of three chemicals. Roughly were coated with BPA. Others were coated with bisphenol S, or BPS. Even so others were coated with a related chemical titled BPSIP. (If that sounds like a mouthful, try saying its full bring up: 4-hydroxyphenyl 4-isoprooxyphenylsulfone.)

BPA and BPS
BPS and BPSIP are increasingly replacing their potentially toxic relative BPA in receipt composition. A new study finds that all trey chemicals give the axe closing rising in the body of people World Health Organization handle receipts. E. Otwell

The chemical structures of BPS and BPSIP resemble that of BPA (compare at right). BPS is identified to have some of the same personal effects in animals as BPA. It mimics hormones and alters genius development in animals. "Replacing BPA with BPS is just strange," says Frederick vom Saal. He works for the University of Missouri in Columbia River. Every bit a developmental endocrinologist (EN-doe-krin-OLL-uh-jizt), he studies how the body responds to hormones as it's growing.

Researchers love little about BPSIP. And before now, they weren't certain whether it even was used in receipt paper. Manufacturers father't have to list complete chemicals misused in their products, especially ones that won't be eaten.

Thayer's team also sampled the blood and urine of cashiers. Many had one operating theater more of the color-change chemicals in their natural object fluids. That was true both before and after they worked a brea during which they handled gross. Blood levels of every last ternary chemicals were within the range at which BPA causes health effects in animals, vom Saal notes.

Thirty-two of the cashiers handled receipts coated with BPS. After working a shift, the average concentration of BPS in the urine of those cashiers had two-fold.

The researchers proverb no corresponding spike of BPSIP in the urine of the 12 cashiers who handled receipts using this coating. Merely BPSIP was detected in blood more often than any of the other chemicals. It showed up in samples from all of the cashiers, no more matter which receipts they had handled at work. The chemical was also in about a third of urine samples from 25 other volunteers WHO did not work arsenic cashiers. This result suggests that BPSIP may be exploited in more products than sporting receipts, Thayer says.

In the 33 cashiers handling BPA-coated receipts, BPA levels did not change a great deal later on temporary. Thayer says this might follow because people are exposed to BPA from so many other sources, including food containers.

bisphenol  A (BPA)A edifice block of polycarbonate plastics and many commercially important resins. This chemical gained general public attending when research showed it could mimic the activity of oestrogen, a female sex hormone.

bisphenol  S (BPS)A stuff normally used in epoxy resins. Its chemical structure is correspondent to it of bisphenol A (BPA), and like BPA, is can imitative the activity of oestrogen, a pistillate steroid.
